Most Visited Countries in Africa: 2026 Ranking by Arrivals

By Ucomeafrik Team9 min read

The short version

The most visited countries in Africa by 2025 tourist arrivals: Morocco, Egypt, South Africa and more, with a West Africa view and the caveats.

Which are the most visited countries in Africa?

By international tourist arrivals in 2025, Morocco is Africa's most visited country with about 19.8 million, followed closely by Egypt with roughly 19 million, then South Africa with about 10.5 million. Kenya (about 2.7 million) and Tanzania (about 2.3 million) lead East Africa. Ghana reported about 1.3 million, which is a useful marker for West Africa.

These are headline figures from national tourism agencies, reported in the press, not a single audited ranking. Countries count visitors differently, so small gaps between countries should not be over-read. The sections below show where each number comes from and how much to trust it.

What are the 2025 arrival figures for each country?

The table lists what we could verify and how confident to be in each number. We have deliberately left out countries where we could not find a trustworthy full-year figure, instead of filling gaps with social-media lists.

If you see a list that places Tunisia around 11 million, treat it with caution. We found it only in social-media posts, not in an official release.

Why do the rankings differ from one list to the next?

If you search this topic you will find lists that put the same countries in different orders with different numbers. That is normal, and it is not always because someone made a mistake.

Countries count differently. International arrivals can include or exclude day-trippers, cross-border shoppers, business travelers and nationals living abroad who return home. UN Tourism has noted that differing counting methods can affect rankings, so two correct figures can be hard to compare.

Years and periods differ. Kenya reports a calendar-year figure and a fiscal-year figure that are close but not the same. A list that mixes them is comparing different periods.

Domestic travel gets mixed in. Tanzania's government cited a total of about 5.9 million tourists in 2025, but that includes domestic visitors. Kenya's headline of 7.9 million tourists likewise includes about 5.2 million domestic travelers. Only the international numbers belong in an "most visited by foreigners" ranking.

Old data lingers. Several popular articles still show figures from earlier years, such as Morocco around 17 million, which is why they rank differently from 2025 coverage.

Why is Morocco the most visited country in Africa?

Morocco combines several advantages that are hard for other countries to match. It is a short flight from Europe, it has decades of tourism investment, and it offers very different experiences in one trip: the medinas of Marrakech and Fez, Atlantic and Mediterranean coast, and the Sahara. Its 2025 total of about 19.8 million was a new record, up roughly 14% on the year before, according to tourism authority data.

Proximity and infrastructure matter more than any single attraction. A country that is cheap to reach and easy to move around in will outperform a more remote one with equally impressive sights. That is also why raw arrivals say little about which destination is best for a particular traveler.

What drives Egypt and South Africa?

Egypt's draw is the pyramids, the Nile and the Red Sea, with arrivals reported at roughly 19 million in 2025, a rise of about 21%. The figure is stated as approximate in the coverage we found, so it is best read as "close to Morocco" and not as a precise second place.

South Africa recorded about 10.5 million arrivals, a record and above its 2019 level, according to Stats SA. A large share of its visitors come from neighboring Southern African countries by land, which is part of why its numbers are high compared with its long-haul tourism reputation. Cape Town, the winelands and Kruger National Park attract the long-haul market.

How do Kenya and Tanzania compare?

Kenya and Tanzania are the classic safari pair, and both reported record or near-record years. Kenya's government reported about 2.7 million international arrivals for calendar 2025, up roughly 9%, and credited visa-free entry, more flight connections and destination marketing. Tanzania reported 2,294,495 international arrivals in 2025, up from 2,141,895.

Their numbers are far lower than North Africa's, but their tourism earns a great deal per visitor because safaris are high-spend. Tanzania's tourism earnings were reported at a record of nearly $4 billion. Arrivals measure volume, not value.

Where does West Africa fit in?

West Africa's arrivals are smaller, but growth and interest in 2026 are strong, driven by diaspora travel and festivals such as Detty December. Ghana's tourism authority reported 1,306,962 international arrivals in 2025, up 1.4% on 1,288,804 in 2024, with business travel the largest single reason for visiting at about 31%.

We could not find a verified 2025 arrivals total for Nigeria, Benin or Togo that we trust enough to publish, so we will not crown a regional leader. If you see a confident West Africa ranking, check its source. For how the region compares for travelers, see our guide to the best countries to visit in West Africa and our Ghana versus Nigeria comparison.

Does "most visited" mean "best to visit"?

No, and treating them as the same is the most common mistake. Arrivals reward proximity to big source markets, airline capacity and decades of marketing. They say nothing about crowding, value for money, authenticity or how a trip feels.

A lower-arrival destination often means quieter sites, more personal service and lower prices, which is exactly why many experienced travelers go to places that rank lower. West Africa is a good example: heritage sites and festivals that are hardly crowded by global standards. Our top 10 countries to visit in Africa ranks by traveler fit, not by volume.

How should you use arrival rankings to plan a trip?

Use them as a rough guide to infrastructure and ease, not as a recommendation. Higher arrivals usually mean easier flights, more accommodation choices and well-worn routes, which suits first-time visitors. Lower arrivals usually mean you rely more on local knowledge and planning, which a good guide provides.

A practical way to choose is to start from what you want to experience, then check the logistics:

  • Safari and wildlife: Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa.
  • Ancient history and desert: Egypt, Morocco.
  • Heritage, festivals and living culture: Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Togo.
  • Easiest first trip: The countries with the most established routes, which is why Morocco, South Africa and Kenya top the lists.

Our guide to traveling to Africa for the first time walks through visas, health and planning for any of them.

How do you read tourism statistics critically?

A few habits make any ranking more useful:

  1. Look for the source. A named national agency or statistics office beats an unsourced list.
  2. Check the year and period. Calendar year and fiscal year are not interchangeable.
  3. Separate international from total. Make sure domestic travelers are not counted.
  4. Treat "roughly" as roughly. Rounded figures should not be used to rank neighbors a few percent apart.
  5. Be wary of social-media lists, which are often missing sources and recycled from older years.

Frequently asked questions

Which African country has the most tourists?

Morocco, with about 19.8 million international arrivals in 2025 according to tourism authority data, followed closely by Egypt at roughly 19 million and South Africa at about 10.5 million.

What is the most visited country in Africa in 2026?

Full-year 2026 figures are not available yet. The latest complete data is for 2025, when Morocco led. Rankings for 2026 will not be known until national agencies publish their annual totals in early 2027.

Is Egypt or Morocco more visited?

Morocco narrowly led in 2025 with about 19.8 million versus Egypt's roughly 19 million. The gap is small enough that counting methods could change the order, so treat them as roughly level.

What is the most visited country in West Africa?

We could not verify a full set of 2025 arrival totals for West African countries, so we do not name one. Ghana reported about 1.3 million international arrivals, which is a useful marker, but a confident regional ranking needs verified figures for every country.

Does most visited mean best to visit?

No. High arrivals reflect proximity to big source markets, airline capacity and marketing, not quality of experience. Many travelers prefer less visited destinations for quieter sites and more personal travel.

How accurate are Africa tourism rankings?

Reasonably accurate for broad ordering, but not for small gaps. Countries count visitors differently, report different periods and sometimes mix in domestic travel, so check the source and the year behind any figure.

Why is Tunisia not in the ranking?

Tunisia has been reported to set a record in 2025, but we could not find an official full-year total, only unsourced social-media figures, so we left it unranked rather than guess.
